Yesterday, November 11th, was Veterans Day.It is an official United States public holiday observed annually. This day is to honor our military veterans, who served in the United States Armed Forces. Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans. Veterans Day is diffrent from Memorial Day, a U.S. public holiday in May. Memorial Day honors those who died while in military service
If you fly an U.S. flag at your house, you should remeber, that once the flag is in bad condition and isn’t proper to fly, you can’t just throw it away. Section 8k of the Flag Code states, “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”
It is possible to contact your local VFW Chapter and ask them for help properly disposing of your flag. Or you can contact your local Elks Lodge , the American Legion, or the Knights of Columbus
When a flag is worn, torned, ripped beyond repair, it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of U.S., it should be retired and disposed of properly. Broward County is participating in this program as part of a national campaign to support flag etiquette to ensure a dignified retirement for the U.S. flag. More info here.
